Birds of a Feather

All his life, Raven has been surrounded by greatness. A proud father, a clever mother, and his sisters, graceful without pause. All of them so beautifully brilliant, Raven can only strive to match their glow.

His name may be akin to a symbol of death, eyes and mind dark as the plumage of his namesake, but never has he thought himself incapable of surpassing the expectations of his family.

What he lacks in powers of observation, in bravery or beauty, he makes up for with sheer tenacity. Quiet pride coupled with the wisdom of knowing when to push and when to hold back.

“The only shame in defeat is refusing to fight again.” His father utters these words with such conviction that Raven’s heart stammers in awe. There are little marks on his skin, only because those words make a home for themselves in his bones.

This is a pureblood.

Standing tall, moving gracefully, carrying oneself with dignity whenever necessary. His father is amazing, but his mother, beautiful as she is, embodies all a pureblood could hope to be. Raven lives in awe of her, and ‘pureblood’ becomes a title Raven wears with pride.

However, that is the extent of its reach. In his household, the topic of bloodlines was treated the way most topics were: silence. It leaves Raven with a lot of time to form his own opinions on various matters.

Dover, United Kingdom, a place filled with as many perspectives as there are people. Raven takes up a habit of strolling along the busy street, stopping for a word with whoever would entertain him in the midst of their busy schedules.

The streets never get the credit they are due as a source of information. Raven learns countless things, clothes dirty from running and falling along the pavement, dirty from getting into trouble with his cousins and children he may never meet again.

Such freedom is restricted as he grows older. He learns to bury his head in books, fill his memory with formulae and incantations. The only respite from the dull ache of boredom is the cool earth found in the neighbouring forest. The flora more approachable than the fauna, cool all around him as he dozes through the evening. At night, his father ensures Raven makes up for lost time, and the cycle repeats itself. Magic, science, forest, manners. Most of it goes over his head, yet he believes he understands, turning his nose up even as he heeds every beck and call.

Only when his mother sets the letter from Hogwarts onto the table between them, his father speaking with pride about fate leading to this moment, only then does he begin to understand the gravity of it all. Raven has never believed in fate, but he believes in rising to challenges, crushing them underfoot just for the thrill of it.

Trickster

As far as Raven is concerned, there is nothing he cannot do so long as he has enough time and motivation to work on it. By the time he realises he’s landed himself or others in a troublesome situation, it’s often too late for him to pull out of it.

The lines between commitment and stubbornness are blurred, but he does his best to pick the two apart. Sadly, knowing he’s wrong is hardly ever enough to get him back on the right path. That typically takes a lot more effort than he’s willing to admit. He hates being wrong, but that doesn’t mean he won’t accept it—no matter how much he grumbles about it.

He may not know when to stop being a pain in the ass, but he does know when to quit. It was one of the toughest lessons he ever learnt, but quitting doesn’t mean giving up. To him, it means taking a moment to reassess the situation, take it apart and put it back together in a way that works. It’s one of the reasons he enjoys transfigurations so much, though he tends to botch them up more than he could admit.

No problem, he just knows 9,754 ways to not go about it.

Raven likes to think he knows a lot, fancies himself a clever guy, but whenever their are novel experiences to be had he is all for them. As a child he explored the muggle world without restraint; as an adult, he does the same with everything he encounters. He has a bad habit of getting so caught up in the theory that he forgets about the application, but he eventually gets around to all aspects.

Despite being quick to tire, a self-proclaimed “lazy bum” if one ever existed, Raven frequently goes out of his way to cause mischief or start petty competitions with others. Most times he forgets to actually mention a competition is on, but that does nothing to stop him from trying to one-up anyone who catches his eye.

With gross doting reserved for his siblings, Raven’s way of showing affection flips from being an utter pain in the ass to quietly sticking beside someone and supporting them however he can. Despite the nagging curiosity and the anxiety that he should do more, he tries to give people their space, only butting in when it’s requested or when he thinks the situation is going to hell in a handbasket.

Robin Amhearst

Big Bird

Big Bird

If there were anyone Raven could admire as much as his mother, it would be Robin.

No matter her antics, or rather because of them, Raven is often in awe of Robin. He can never bring himself to say it outright, but he shows it through giddiness at her approval and siding with her even when she fights a losing battle.

Wren Amhearst

Baby Bird

Baby Bird

The apple of his eye, his precious baby sister. A year feels like decades and he takes his job as her big brother very seriously. Never mind that no one ever appointed him as Wren's guard dog, he believes it is an unspoken fact.

In another world he could be an admirable big brother, if only he would stop poking his nose into her business.
